I've tried on occasion and I've been able to let go with only one hand. You've probable seen me doing it before in this pic. I just figured there is no way I can let go with both hands though because no matter how hard I press my calves to the pole, I can't suspend myself that way without sliding down. But last night it occurred to me that I don't actually need to completely hold myself still on the pole to do this trick with no hands. All I have to be able to do is use my legs to slow my descent. And I gave it a try, and sure enough, there I was descending slowly with no hands. I tried to arch my back but I hadn't yet reviewed the techniques for the trick so I didn't know what to do when I reached the ground. I tried it again and let me tell you, getting down gracefully (instead of slamming face first into the floor) is no easy task. And neither is repeating the trick a second time. I couldn't get the same grip with my legs that I did before. I guess muscles can tire out pretty quickly when they're doing something they are unaccustomed to.
I can hardly believe how close I am to doing this trick. This would be my fifth upsidedown trick, and that just blows my mind. This time last year I could only do one. Oh who am I kidding, three months ago I could only do one. There is something about surpassing previous limitations that makes me want to push past even more of them - and so I'm teaching myself and learning new tricks at a whirlwind pace.
