getting lost on the subway sucks when you don't speak French

I was watching Ridicule with a new friend tonight when I suddenly recognized the location in Paris. And when I say recognized, I mean recognized. I've been to that actual location.

So as I'm watching the movie I blurt out, "Is that the Palace of Versailles?"

To which he replied, "yes."

scene from Ridicule

I was rather in awe at that moment. I mean I've often referred to my backpacking romp through Europe as "one of the biggest mistakes of my life." So much in fact that I've practically erased it from my memory. But this jarred my memory because I recognized having sat on those very steps (I even have a picture or two I took there - crammed somewhere in the back of a cupboard). Only this scene I was witnessing was a period piece in full costume. I guess I never really made the connection when I was actually on the steps of the Palace that this was the sight of so much drama and history. It was hard to imagine it with so many tourists walking all over it in their shorts and sneakers and snapping pictures with their digital cameras.

Yes, that trip wasn't worth much to me...until now. Now I can look at such a beautifully done costume drama re-enacted in its historical location and say, "I've actually been there." Yeah, that's kinda cool. I am, of course, going to continue to try and forget the part about getting lost on the subway on the way there.
