The Four Agreements

kalsia posted "the Four Agreements" in her journal today. These are based on ancient Toltec wisdom and have received renewed popularity due to Don Miguel Ruiz's book The Four Agreements.

Living by these makes life less complicated and in many cases less painful. Unfortunately I can usually only remember one at a time. The one that has been the most helpful - the one I strive to remember the most - is the one about not making assumptions. I've watched too many people make themselves angry or miserable over something they think somebody meant. This one particular "agreement" has helped me stay calm and peaceful in any permanent or temp work environment no matter how I'm treated while I later listen to acquaintances and read in journals about how upset people are with their co-workers. Of course I can still be hurt by people just as much as the next person. But now not everything that is apparently directed at me bothers me. Now I can filter a good deal of it and shrug it off. So considering the amount of pain or anger this one agreement has spared me, I think it's fair to say that I am a huge fan of the agreements. Now I just need to start working on the first one. I guess posting about how I feel about some one in my journal or how I feel due to something they do could technically qualify as "gossip" or not "speaking with integrity".
