That wouldn't be so bad actually. You could just skip the first night for Halloween events and then attend the rest of the weekend when there are no Halloween events.

How much does it cost to go to just the dance? DO I have to have to have a pass for the whole event? I might want to go with you to the dance. I was worried about parking. I have no idea if this is anything like NWC. I haven't bought a pass, because I don't plan on having a hotel room and am wondering how the heck I'll find parking if I show up late.

Their website does not give a price for one day entry. They only say this: "While we may be able to offer one day memberships at the door, it is not a certainty. Our facility has a finite amount of space and if we exceed that capacity with presales, then we will be unable to sell any memberships at the door, and we regretfully won't be offering any one day memberships."

IMO, they were probably thinking that it'd be a good alternative to house parties and clubs for Halloween. IME, it's a lot more fun to spend the time putting outfits/costumes together when you know you'll be able to wear them where they'll be appreciated (ie, not in a packed, dark, possibly smokey environment, trying not to have any drinks spilled on you or your skirt stepped on).

I don't know of any clubs offering Halloween events that weekend. Only house parties.

There are probably a few (I know there's a burlesque show at the Rendezvous that weekend, and some other events). I guess I should have said "house parties and/or clubs".

Either way the sentiment is the same. I'd much rather put effort into a costume that isn't going to get trampled on or have drinks splashed on it. One of the things I really like about cons is that you get to see other people's costumes too. In all the house parties and club/events I've been too for Halloween, it's very rare that you get to see everyone's costumes in the light. ;)

Wow, I have never been to a party with low lights before. And none of the parties I go to have any emphasis on drinking. I mean there is some alcohol, but it's not all that popular. I'm more into parties with good conversations and snuggle piles. I don't recall any super crowded ones with low lights and people walking around with drinks in their hands (well, except for those crazy Halloween bashes seedmoon used to throw, but that was years ago).

I think you're taking me too literally.

I'll break it down:
Clubs = dark, crowded, alcohol, smoking (sometimes)
Parties (big) = dark (some areas), crowded, alcohol
Parties (small) = maybe not dark, but still indoors after dark, have to sit on furniture (need comfy costume), same with 'snuggle piles'.

Again, either way, the sentiment is the same. If I spend a lot of time and effort (esp if I make it from scratch) on a costume/outfit, and others do too, I'd rather go somewhere where I can see there's show off mine, and people watch other costumes. At a con, there's room to move around, better lighting (or during the day activities), alcohol & smoke-free areas, and things to *do* in between the visiting, catching up, and (maybe) partying. I know other people are like that too.

Also, it's not like Steamcon is *on* Halloween. Most holiday events are on Halloween weekend.

I do wish I was going to Steamcon. But at least I have my steampunk costume ready for next year. Heck, by next year I will have a different steampunk costume for every day I am there!
