We didn't even have cell phones when I was in high school

From Oprah Magazine:

"There's a new phenomenon called sexting. A recent survey done by Teenage Research Unlimited found that 22 percent of girls have sent nude or seminude imagines of themselves to boys on their cell phones, and not necessarily to their boyfriends, even though 75 percent of teens understand that this behavior may be risky."

At first when I read this I was kind of horrified. But then I thought, maybe this is the safest sex ever. What do you think of this whole teen sexting thing?

I'm personally strongly against this but that's because I had an "old" style problem with this many years ago. To date myself, back in 1996 I had a boyfriend who took some pictures (with a real camera with real film) of me naked on a bed. I did it because, well he was my boyfriend and I was an idiot. When we broke up it was messy, as most teenage breakups tend to be. In anger, he scanned the photos and posted them on internet dating sites with my phone number and home address. He also used hacker software to get into my e-mail (AOL at the time) and e-mailed the pictures to everyone on my contact list which included several relatives.

I had just turned 16 and didn't know how to handle the situation. Between my extended family thinking I was a whore and strange men showing up at my home looking for easy sex, I completely broke down and fell into a deep depression. My mother tried to get the police involved, but back then there really wasn't a clear course of action and so nothing happened.

Teenagers tend to do stupid things. That's part of being a teenager. That said, I think that most of them probably aren't considering the potential consequences and most people out of that age bracket don't understand exactly how horrible the situation can be if the recipient of the photos chooses to use them later on against the girl.
