Proud mama

I just arranged the first ever private lesson between one of my instructors and a student. Up until now my instructors teach only level 1. They don't teach upper level classes and they don't teach privates. But the instructor who has been with me the longest is doing an amazing job. She is so good now that if she gets students from any of the other instructors, she can look at those students and tell me how the other new instructors are doing based on the student's mastery of the moves. I'm so happy with her that I just started training her to teach level 2. And now I'm trusting her with private lessons as well, at the full lesson rate of $75 per hour. Of course I get a cut of that, since she's using my studio and teaching students I worked to obtain and teaching them lesson plans I developed. But I have yet to decide on what's a fair rate to pay her. I'm thinking of giving her $40 per hour (plus the $4 in taxes I'm require to pay to the state on that $40). I'm hoping that's a fair percentage for both of us. She gets $40, I get $31, and the state of Washington gets $4. Does that sound fair?

I'm so proud of her. She is an irreplaceable asset to my business and I only wish I could afford to pay her more. She has a college degree and I know she makes a lot more than $40 per hour at her bartending job (in tips). So I'm lucky to have her. And she's only 23 years old, can you believe it?
