I've always wondered how this works

I would like to know how other people handle this. If you own or have owned your own home or condo and you have been in this situation, please let me know how you handled it or would handle it. Or if you plan to own your own home or condo in the future, please let me know how you would handle it. Here is the situation:

You own your own home or condo. Your significant other rents. You decide to move in together and of course it makes the most sense for the renter to give up their home and not the owner. So your significant other moves in with you.

You would...

Continue to pay the mortgage on your own and let your partner live there for free.

Continue to pay the mortgage on your own and let your partner pay other expenses like the groceries and utilities.
7(17.5%)
Let your partner contribute rent, which you apply toward your mortgage, but without making your partner a legal co-owner of the home.
27(67.5%)
Make your partner a legal co-owner of the home and have them pay half the mortgage.

None of the above, please explain in a posted comment.

Same situation, but you and your significant other get married. Now that you're married and living in your home together:

Once you are married, you would...

Continue to pay the mortgage on your own and let your spouse live there for free.

Let your spouse pay part of the mortgage, but without making your spouse a legal co-owner of the home (but maybe the legal heir if you pass away).

Make your spouse a legal co-owner of the home and have them pay half the mortgage.
