Philosophical question for everyone...

At service this morning the talk included a story about a squash experiment. You can read a little bit about by clicking here but the short version is this: They put a metal harness around a squash that was growing in the earth and attached weights to measure the force of the growing squash. This poor little squash had to push extra hard to grow against the force of the metal band and the weights. It ended up exerting a force of 5,000 pounds!!

Upon dissecting this squash they found that it grew fibers inside stronger and thicker than any other squash. But most importantly, it's roots had grown hundreds of feet deeper and wider than any normal squash. It developed these roots to have the resources necessary to grow and succeed with the weight and force of that metal band working against it. Those extra roots allowed it to exert that 5,000 pounds of force.

Here is my question for you. Do you have those "roots" in your life that allow you to achieve more than you could normally? What or who are those roots; biological family, chosen family or community, a significant other (or others), or some other relationship or source? What are those roots in your life that give you the strength and what are you able to do that you can't imagine having been able to do without it or them? Or if you don't have those roots, how much more do you think you could accomplish if you had them? And what or who would those roots be in your life if you had the choice?
